2023 Elections: Peter Obi Defeats Atiku, Tinubu In Cross River

Labor Party (LP) Peter Obi the presidential candidate won the Cross River State.

With his victory, Peter Obi, widely regarded as the underdog of the election, beats other challengers in the All Progressives’ Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu; People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar; and New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso.
,
The final results, announced Tuesday morning at the Cross River Presidential Election Center, showed Obi winning 179,917 votes, beating Tinubu’s 130,520, Atiku’s 95,425 and Kwankwaso’s 1,644.

This is Obi State’s fourth victory after Nasarawa, Enugu and Lagos.

The triumph of the former governor of the state of Anambra at Cross River is significant for several reasons.

First, Cross River is historically a PDP state with three consecutive two-term governors coming from the party since 1999, including incumbent governor Ben Ayade when he was elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2019.
,
Ayade’s exit to the PCA in 2021, however, brought a key South-South state to the ruling party after losing Edo State to the PDP and recently defecting to Governor Godwin Obaseki, who won the only 2020 gubernatorial election in the state In Cross River, 1,691,642 voters registered to cast the presidential election.
,
,416,968 valid votes were cast, 24,608 rejected votes, for a total of 441,576 votes.
