ASUU Commences Strike 

he breaking news today is that the Academic staff Union of universities in Nigeria (ASUU) has embarked on a two-week nation warning strike with an immediate effect from Monday 9th March, 2020.

Following the ongoing strike by EBSUASUU Chapter which most students in Ebonyi state university hoped to have the strike called off as the Governor of Ebonyi state , Engr.Dave Umahi ordered the force to call off the strike this Monday.

It happened the other way round that the proposed to be called off strike has now turned to a general strike in Nigeria universities.

The strike which was declared by National Executive committee (NEC) of which ASUU ended its meeting in Enugu, south east Nigeria on Monday.

The general president of the organization in person of Biodun Ogunyemi, pronounced the strike in Enugu state.

ASUU claimed that the strike is based on the decision of Federal governmentto stop salaries of lecturers who has not enrolled in the integrated payroll and personnel information system (IPPIS).

This means that ASUU is opposed to the used of integrated payroll and personnel information system (IPPIS).

Therefore, this warning strike action by ASUU is to compel federal government to implement the agreements and resolutions of memorandum of action discussed in the 2009 ASUU-FGNagreement, the 2013 memorandum of understanding (MOU) and the 2017 memorandum of action (MOA) which has not all been implemented as raised by the officials of the lecturers’ union.

General Note

All Federal, state universities in Nigeria are therefore to note the warning strike is for a space of two weeks and all universities are to partake in this. ASUU shall continue to carry out this exercise if their demands are not met.
