EPISODE 37

“Open your eyes Ariel..” Xander hit her face gently and she opened her eyes, only barely. She was really tired, but everyone was happy that she was still alive.

“You have to go through with the surgery, please” he said to her and she shook her head.

“I don't want anything to happen to my baby” she cried.

“Nothing will happen, you both will be fine, please. I can't bear to watch you suffer like this” Xander said and hugged her head to his chest. She cried on him.

“Let's do the surgery” He said, Miguel was fuming, but had to keep his cool.

The doctor nodded and left the ward, she came back with a paper on a clipboard and told the nurses to prepare everything needed for the surgery.

“You have to sign this, the hospital or it's staff will not be responsible for the loss of life of Ariel or her child due to circumstances beyond our control” the doctor said to Miguel and he sighed, swallowing the lump in his throat. He nodded and signed the paper.

“Thank you. We will begin the surgery immediately” the doctor took the paper and walked away.

Miguel was extremely worried, so was Xander but the both of them refused to say a word to each other.

The surgery was about to begin when Ariel felt a tension between her legs and wanted to push to release it. She cried and wailed in agony, trying her best to release the tension. The doctor who was about to inject her noticed that she was pushing and decided to let her go one more time before proceeding with the surgery.

“I can see the baby's head!” The doctor announced and the nurses surrounded her immediately, ready for anything.

“Oooh!!!” Ariel yelped and gave one final push with all her strength and the baby was expelled. She fell back, panting heavily, bands of sweat dripping down the sides of her face. She looked pale and tired.

Everyone kept still, waiting in suspense for the baby to cry. For a few seconds, it did not cry, so the doctor had to hit it's back in an attempt to get it to cry.

“Is my baby okay?” Ariel asked in a raspy voice, she had already lost her voice from screaming so much.

The doctor hit the baby again and it finally burst out crying, very loudly that it attracted the attention of those passing by the theatre. Miguel and Xander were no exception, they heard the cry and turned to look at each other, excitement all over their faces. They were about to rush in to see what happened but the warden outside the theater wouldn't let them in, it was against the rules.

“Congratulations! It's a girl, a beautiful baby girl” the doctor announced to Ariel before placing the baby on her chest. Ariel laughed and cried at the same time as she put her arms around the little one. She kissed the child until she stopped crying, she couldn't believe that she was holding her baby, it was a whole new level of happiness.

“I love you baby” she whispered to the child who was trying to raise her hand. Ariel's eyes started to close slowly, the nurses took the baby from her to clean her up while allowing her to rest. They cleaned her up as well and put her on monitor.

The doctor went outside to tell Miguel and Xander the good news. They were excited when they learned that both Ariel and the baby were okay, they didn't even know when they hugged each other, forgetting their differences.

★★ AN HOUR LATER ★★

“Ariel” Xander called, walking into the ward with Miguel behind him. Ariel who was now awake, smiled at him, she was holding her baby to her chest, not willing to let go of her.

“Oh my gosh” Xander cooed when he saw the baby, he couldn't help but gush over the cute little baby, she had Ariel's features, but Miguel's intimidating eyes. He stretched out his hand to carry her and Ariel handed the baby to him.

Miguel was standing by the bed, watching them. A smile crept up on his face as he stared at his beautiful daughter, he couldn't describe the amount of happiness he felt knowing that he brought such an angel into the world.

“She's so cute, look at her cute little arms and fingers” Xander had always been a sucker for babies, he loved them dearly. He turned to Miguel and stood up, he handed him the baby.

“Here, your daughter” Xander said. Miguel took the child from him and smiled at her.

“Hello love” Miguel whispered, touching the baby's hand with his index finger, the baby grabbed his finger and held tightly onto it. Miguel felt warm and fuzzy.

“So, what have you decided to name her?” Xander asked the both of them. Ariel glanced at Miguel and then back at Xander.

“I already have a name in mind” she spoke up, she was still weak.

“I'll accept whatever you name her” Miguel answered immediately. She sighed.

“Alina” Ariel said.

“Wow” Xander exclaimed.

“Alina..” Miguel repeated and looked down at the baby who was still holding his hand. He smiled at her again.

“Welcome to world Alina” he added and the baby growled, moving her hand and feet.

“Here..” Miguel gave the baby back to Ariel who cuddled her.

“Um.. Xander, if you don't mind, I want to have a word with Ariel, alone” Miguel requested, that was the most polite he'd ever been. Xander nodded and excused himself to wait in the hall.

Miguel sat next to Ariel and sighed, anxious about what he's about to say.

“Ariel, we have a family now” he started, she was busy glaring at him.

“It wouldn't be good if our child is raised in a broken home, we have to raise her together” he stated and she scoffed.

“I was raised in a home, by both of my parents, with so much love, but what happened at last? I was sold to a heartless monster who does not know the first thing about compassion” Ariel fired, her eyes red with fury.

“But I'm a changed man Ariel, I changed because of you. Can't you see that I love you? Give me a chance to be a good husband to you and a wonderful father to our daughter” he said, indirectly proposing to her. Ariel shook her head.

“You've changed? Old habits die hard Miguel. I don't want my daughter to be raised by a mafia boss, a killer, a torturer! My daughter will not have anything to do with the mafia” she insisted and Miguel sighed.

“But..”

“I don't want to hear anything!” She argued.

“I've apologized to you already, what more do you want?!” He was getting really upset and so was Ariel.

“What more do I want? Will your apology fix the permanent emotional and psychological damage you've inflicted on me? Will your apology change the fact that you tortured my brother and almost killed me twice? Will it bring back the hundred men you killed? Your apology has fixed nothing!” She said, her heart filled with pain.

Yes, she knew she had developed some sort of feelings for him, but it didn't change anything, because the monster in him would still resurface at some point. He had to feel the pain he inflicted on other people. He separated people from their loved ones without remorse, now karma had come to separate him from those he loved.

“Did you seriously expect to get away with everything? And gain everything you want? That just shows how greedy you are” she added and called for the nurse immediately because her baby was getting uncomfortable with all the yelling.

“Please take this man away, I want to be alone” she requested. The nurse turned to Miguel to tell him to leave but Miguel stood up and walked away before the nurse could say anything.

“Hey, Miguel, what happened in there?” Xander asked. Miguel stopped briefly and looked at him with those intimidating eyes of his. Xander was shaken.

“Take care of them.” Miguel said and left the hospital. He was heartbroken, not because he lost her, but because she told him the truth. He regretted everything he did to her, but regretted falling in love even more, because it was the most painful sh*t he ever experienced.
