Rotimi Akeredolu, the governor of Ondo State, has passed away.

Leukemia and prostate cancer, two conditions that had left him unable to move for several months, claimed his life.

Details to follow.

In a statement, Richard Olatunde, the governor’s spokesperson, stated that Akeredolu would send a letter to the state House of Assembly designating his deputy, Lucy Aiyedatiwa, as the acting governor.

Allegedly afflicted with cancer, Akeredolu has been traveling to Germany for treatment, at which time he relinquished acting leadership to Aiyedatiwa.

The governor was absent on April 3, 2023, and July 10, 2023 due to medical leave. He turned over control to the deputy governor at that point. On September 7, he left the nation again and sent a letter to the state House of Assembly alerting the members.

The governor was supposed to be staying at his own home in Ibadan, but after returning from a medical vacation in Germany in September, he was not seen in Ondo State.

His departure left the state without a clear leader, and the executive council split into groups led by the deputy governor’s supporters and the governor’s supporters.

All of the media assistants working for the deputy governor’s office were fired by the governor in September. According to an insider source, the aides’ dismissal was due to their disobedience to the proper authorities and their insubordination.

Following his second medical vacation, Aiyedatiwa, who is filling in for Akeredolu, urged the state’s citizens and other interested parties to work with him to implement the governor’s vision for the state’s advancement.

After his trip to Germany for a medical vacation, Akeredolu had given Aiyedatiwa the authority to assume the role of governor. The development was also reported in writing by the governor to the state House of Assembly.

In a nationwide broadcast, the acting governor acknowledged that the political crisis that has enveloped the state recently has tested people’s passion for democracy and the state. He urged everyone to put the past behind them, come together, and work with him to advance the state.

“Yesterday is already behind us,” he declared. Now is the time to elevate the governor’s noble vision and goal for the state, with respect and affection for one another. I make a request to each and every member of the Ondo State administration for your sincere assistance, collaboration, and commitment.

To support the enormous and rapid development that Mr. Governor has zealously and clearly envisioned, we require a resurgence of unity.

“My decent individuals of Ondo State believe that the events of the past served only to shorten the course of our transition to democracy. We have bounced back as a government.
