Valentine’s Day did not start out with flowers and chocolates or poems, It actually started with a bunch of naked and drunk romans.
In the ancient times the Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia from February 13-15. This pagan festival was celebrated to acknowledge the god who protected them from the wolves. At the beginning of the celebration, the men or priests would sacrifice a dog and a goat, then whip women with the hides of those animals in the belief that it would increase their fertility.
During this nude drunken festival, the young women would get in line and wait for the men to hit them. They wanted to be hit so they can be more fertile.
After hours of being whipped with the hides of these dead animals, the ladies then had a chance to be included in a matchmaking ritual. The men(bachelors) would pick a name from an urn and will then be matched with the new sweetheart for the night.
In the third century, Emperor Claudius the 2nd ordered that two men be killed on February 14 one was a Roman priest known for standing up for love. The empire was almost crumbling and In a desperate attempt to hold it together, the emperor decided to ban all marriages of young people because he needed single people to fight as soldiers. Father Valentine didn’t adhere to his decree as he was not a fan of such idea. He continued to perform marriages in secret. When he was caught, he was imprisoned and later killed. Valentine supposedly left a farewell note before he was beheaded where he signed “From your Valentine”
Then In the fifth century, the Pope Gelasius the 1st decided to combine St. Valentine’s Day with that Lupercalia festival in an effort to wipe out the polytheistic tradition. The feast was really popular and prevalent, so the Christians may have figured that the only way to get rid of it was to change it to a feast of love in remembrance of the martyr Saint valentine of Terni.
