The Cowboys host an ongoing kicker contest, but a blast from the past—and not so good—in Brett Maher seems to have won the job.
There are a number of gaps the Dallas Cowboys have entered off the season and need to fill in some of these questions leading up to training camp. But given the way the special teams have performed in recent years, a lot of fans have been honed in the kick competition.
On Tuesday, as the rosters had to be scaled back to 80 players, though, the Cowboys may have settled the matter — a solution that particularly concerned fans won’t be feeling.
Dallas made the decision to lay off Lirim Hajarallah on Tuesday, leaving ex-team player Brett Maher the only player remaining on the roster, apparently indicating he would be the man.

Cowboys: Brett Maher’s win in kicker contest won’t comfort fans
Maher was the Dallas flagship for 2018 and part of the 2019 campaign as well. However, after making two-thirds of his field goal attempts and missing two key attempts in climax matches that ended in a loss, he was released for veteran Kay Forbath.
He’s since seen some short time with the Jets and Saints, but now all the ways are back for the Cowboys and it’s hard for fans to feel confident in the player who was cut three years ago just for not performing on par.
Maybe one or two more players will be brought into the building to move on and Maher hasn’t quite won the job yet, but that looks like it is at the moment.
For the sake of the fans, we hope Maher can cross the 70% mark this season if he is indeed the starting player. baby steps.
