There’s another pandemic going on in Nigeria, it is a silent killer and it is sweeping through our neighborhoods — from the high borough of the elites to the slums of the most vulnerable and downtrodden of our society and nobody, I mean nobody, not even government is showing concern.

Methamphetamine Hydrochloride, popularly known as ‘Mkpuru Mmiri’ in Igbo land or crystal meth, comes in clear crystal chunks or shiny blue-white rocks. Also called Ice or glass on the streets.

Meth

According to a report by Enact Africa, In late 2019, following the dismantling of a lab in Obinugwu village in south-east Nigeria, NDLEA Special Enforcement Team commander Sunday Zirangey reportedly said that meth was a serious threat and that Nigeria risked turning into a narco state.

Despite the acute health risks associated with its consumption – such as high blood pressure and cardiovascular-related illness – a growing number of young people in Nigeria especially in the eastern part of the country reportedly take the drug.

According to medical sources, Meth is dangerous, not just because it is composed of toxic chemicals and fillers, but because it severely dehydrates the human body. Your body is something like 80% water; if every system in your body requires hydration to function, regenerate, and perform, you can easily imagine the long term damage caused by persistent and severe dehydration. It also increases heart rate, which is detrimental to cardiac health. Any time an organ has to work harder than normal, damage is a potential side effect.

Meth is also a stimulant, which means you typically don’t sleep for as long as you’re actively using. Sleep is as essential to the human body as oxygen and water. Persistent sleep deprivation leads to poor rebound on all fronts and degrades the ability of the human mind to make healthy or timely decisions, whether they be conscious or subconscious. It also acts as an unnaturally effective appetite suppressant. We all know how damaging anorexia can be.

According to reliable medical sources, the long term abuse of meth leads to permanent damage to blood vessels of heart and brain, high blood pressure leading to heart attacks, strokes and death. It can also lead to destruction of tissues in nose if sniffed, respiratory (breathing) problems if smoked, Infectious diseases and abscesses if injected, Malnutrition, weight loss, Severe tooth decay, Disorientation, apathy, confused exhaustion, Strong psychological dependence And Damage to the brain similar to Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and epilepsy.

In conclusion

Meth starves you, dries you up, deprives you of reat and recuperation, stresses your organs, and causes lasting damage that may not be reversible. To anyone considering using methamphetamine I would say – look at the outcome, it’s really, really not good for you!

The message is clear – don’t try meth because you might not be able to stop, and if you are already using you need to quit right now.
